The word Punjab was formally introduced in the early 17th century CE. It is a combination of the Persian words panj (five) and ab (water), thus the (land of) five rivers. The five rivers, namely Chenab, Jhelum, Ravi, Beas and Sutlej, flow via the Panjnad River into the Indus River and eventually into the Arabian Sea.
Punjab was established in 1st July 1970. The native language of the province is Punjabi with many Punjabi dialects including Majhi dialect (Standard), Saraiki dialect and Hindko dialect.
